MOAI RESTORATION PROJECT

The Moais raised up

It was August 7th, memorial day, when the first Moai was finally rebuilt on the altar. It is 5.8 meters high, and weighs 41 tons.
In order to have these Moais raised up, the neck was joined to the trunk of the Moai, by boring a hole in the neck and the trunk, inserting a pipe of stainless steel wound with carbon cloth, and fixed with Epoxy resin. During the year 1995, 14 Moai statues were re-erected.
Only one statue remains down. It was weathered badly and will possibly collapse just trying to handle it.
A solution for this statue will be found after a few years, when the result of testing for the most suitable resin is known.
