MOAI RESTORATION PROJECT

Start of excavation and research for the Moais

30 Easter Islanders, archaeologists and restoration specialists from Japan, U.S.A., Chile, Poland, and Italy joined together and started excavation in October.
Here is a brief history of Ahu Tongariki, the largest ruins of the island. 15 Moais were laid down during tribal war in the late 17th century. In l960, a tidal wave caused by a Chile earthquake struck the ruins and broke the alter so that an area as large as 2 hectares was turned to rubble. Some were buried in stones, and some were knocked down without heads. They seemed to shriek a grievous voice for help.
In parallel with the excavation, two local men were given instructions on the operation of the mobile crane and its maintenance. After acquiring the necessary skills, the two men took turns operating the crane.
